An electronic drum kit with a pair of closed-back headphones is the most practical answer for the majority of Australian homes. Here's what separates a kit worth buying from one worth sending back.

Why e-kits are quieter than acoustic kits — but not silent

An acoustic drum kit runs 90–100 dB at the player's ear, roughly the volume of a lawnmower. An e-kit doesn't eliminate sound entirely; it eliminates acoustic resonance. Instead of a stretched drum head vibrating through a shell and projecting into the room, you hit a pad that absorbs the impact. The signal goes to a module; the sound comes through headphones.

What remains is the mechanical impact sound — pads hitting, cymbals moving, the hi-hat pedal clacking against the floor. Through carpeted floors and walls this is typically 40–50 dB, which is a significant improvement. A player in an upstairs bedroom above the living room will still transmit some impact sound through the floor.

The practical fix: a rubber kit mat or foam floor tiles under the entire set. This dampens floor vibration — usually the noise source that bothers people in adjacent rooms — far more than the pads themselves.

Mesh pads vs rubber pads: the choice that matters most

Entry-level e-kits use rubber pads. They work, but they produce a sharper slap on impact and that mechanical noise is what travels through walls and floors.

All-mesh kits use woven mesh heads similar in feel to a real drum head. The mesh absorbs far more of the impact sound on contact. For households where noise is the primary concern — apartment living, shared walls, school-age practice sessions that run into the evening — mesh is worth the step up.

Most drum modules use a 6.35mm (¼ inch) headphone jack — the same connection as a guitar amp — not the 3.5mm jack on most consumer headphones.
